Chechen entrepreneur Bulat Chagaev has bought the top division Neuchâtel Xamax football club in Sweden from its president Sylvio Bernasconi.

Information on change of Xamax’s owner appeared in mid-April. President of the club Sylvio Bernasconi was searching for a purchaser. The club was purchased by Chagaev, who is also vice-president of Grozny’s Terek Football Club.

“Neuchatel Xamax is happy to announce the takeover of the famous club by the businessman Bulat Chagaev. This takeover, the value of which is being kept confidential, will be officially ratified by the general assembly on May 12,” the twice Swiss champions said in a statement. It is expected that Soviet and Russian player Andrei Rudakov will be the club’s new president.

Chagaev has promised to take the unsung Swiss side into the Champions League. “I’m very happy to lead Neuchatel onto the path of national victory. With a motivated and well-prepared team, we will quickly accept the most incredible challenges in Europe, starting with the Champions League. Officially, football season begins on 15 July and the fall league will start in Europe. A Xamax won the last four games and already got a ticket to the European Cup. God willing, we’ll fight this year for the European League. With regard to long-term plans, we intend to promote in Europe Chechen relations for football. Dedication to the field, thinking, and professionalism. Here are three things that we require from the players’ Xamax. The head coach deals with four nominations. I would not want to divulge their names. This year we are planning to buy seven players. One hundred percent I can assure you that it will not be prominent players. We will look for talented players who fit the style of play to our team,” said Mr Chagaev

The businessman did not name the sum paid. He said that he may also purchase the Maladiere stadium. Chagaev commented on his business, saying that he operates in construction, metal trading and development of land plots, but has never been involved in the oil and gas industries. The businessman said that the purchase of the club is not money-laundering. Chagaev said that he has a house in Saint-Sulpice, however it belongs to his wife.

Neuchâtel were formed in 1970 by the merger of two clubs and the team have won the Swiss championship twice, in 1987 and 1988. The team, eighth in the ten-team Swiss Super League, are still involved in the fight against relegation this season.
